There are times of little surprises, just like when we shot the “SUNFROST” new line of frozen soups. Did you know that frozen vegetables, even more then regular fresh unfrozen vegetables, keep almost all of their nutrition values? I didn’t… Never the less, it was tasty!

So, together with Nurit Kariv the food stylist, Yamit Hadad (Baruch-Nae) art direction & design and of course Ronit Kedar the product manger and Carmit From “Sunfrost”, we shot (and drank) some excellent soups…

כל אחד מאיתנו קונה דברים אחרים בסופר (לפעמים אין ברירה וצריך להכנס לשם, זה עמוק ב די.אן.איי. שלנו, אנחנו מין של ציידים לקטים). העושר עצום וזה נהדר, כי מישהו צריך לצלם את הצעות ההגשה. חוץ מזה, תמיד אפשר ללמוד דברים חדשים: כרמית נחמני מסנפרוסט, למשל, לימדה אותי להפתעתי שהירקות הקפואים שלהם, שנכנסים כמעט מיד לאחר איסופם-מהשדה להקפאה-עמוקה שומרים על (כמעט) כל הערכים התזונתיים וניצלים מאובדן הערך התזונתי של הפירות והירקות. רק לפני שנה למדתי, עירוני שכמותי, כמה טעים יכול להיות תירס, מיד אחרי שנקטף, בלי שום בישול, כמו שהוא. מתוק להפליא, עסיסי ומתפצח בשיניים. התירס הטעים ביותר שאכלתי מעודי. מסתבר שתוך שעות בודדות מהקטיף הופך הרוב מוחלט של הסוכר בגרעיני התירס לעמילן. כך הוא מגיע אלינו לסיר, אחרי ימים ואפילו יותר והבישול, שב והופך חלק מהעמילן לסוכר וזה סוף גילגולו של התירס החם…

אז ככה טבלנו במרקים החדשים של סנפרוסט, מרקים מלקטי ירקות קפואים ובריאים; ימית חדד המוכשרת לעילא (ברוך נאה), נורית קריב (מוסד בפני עצמו), רונית קידר וכרמית מסנפרוסט והיה לנו טעים ולהפליא!.

Hagiga Ba’ckfar (A rural celbration) was established back at 2002 by the late chef Chanoch Farber and chef Michal Koren. After he was gone, they kept on working together, doing so good. The pictures were taken while working for their new web site & catalog.

לאוכל יש טעם ולטעם יש שמות. ליסמין ולי יש מזווה שלם של טעמים שכולם “חנוך פרבר“. הכרנו לפני 15 שנה, נפגשנו בתחילת דרכו של הסטודיו תוך כדי עבודה עבור “על השולחן“. חני לא הפסיק להפתיע אותנו בטעמים העשירים, האופפים והכובשים שלו. לא הרבה אח“כ חברנו אליו ואל עופרה ריזנפלד לפרויקט ראשון מסוגו בארץ- ”מדריך מפה לטיולי אוכל“.ימים שלמים במשך שנתיים, ארבעה אנשים במזדה MPV ממטולה עד אילת. כשהגענו לכפר הס, ל“כד קפה” של מיכל קורן הצעירה נמלא חני התרגשות, כמו ילד קטן בחנות ממתקים. ספק לנו, ספק לעצמו הוא אמר שיום אחד הם יעשו משהו ביחד וזה קרה שנים אח“כ ב“חגיגה בכפר“.כשחני נפרד מאיתנו לעולם שכולו טוב, לסעוד את ליבו בליוויתן הגדול ובשור הבר יחד עם שאר צדיקים וטובים, המשיכה רונית את השותפות עם מיכל. המקום פורח והאוכל יצא מאותו מזווה טעמים מופלא של חני, שיסמין ואני נושאים איתנו.

זהו. וכל השאר זה שיר אהבה. הצילומים נעשו עבור הקטלוג והאתר החדש של “חגיגה בכפר”.

Once, a friend of a dear friend and client of ours came back from a very tough and demanding bicycle-singles tournament at the Canadian eastern coast. We were really impressed by the amazing pictures he showed us and I expressed my admiration of the beautiful natural northern light. But this guy just snored and told us that the photographer drove from one shooting point to another and filled the forest with flashes generated by a diesel generator…

It happened to us, not so long ago, while one of our colleagues said that we are doing magic shooting day light pictures, while most of our work is done at the studio, working hard to make it look just like he thought it was: a daylight shot.

But from time to time we are asked to shoot views and nature, just like it happened in the recent “AHAVA Dead Sea Laboratories” new branding project (art direction: Studio Avigail)­­.

We were asked to provide pictures of the Dead Sea that will follow the Dead Sea Laboratories marketing vision throughout the new branding concept. We figured it out and asked the client for an unlimited budget for a four-season shooting schedule, small lighting crew and one four wheel drive generator truck. We didn’t get it.

So, there is always the absurd conflict between forcing nature to look natural using electric flashes, Cool-White movie projectors, reflectors, diffusers and so on, and trying to catch nature at its best..

Here it is, the little magnificent robin that made our little back yard its home. I shot its picture  with my G11. Maybe if I would have cleaned the window glass before… and used another camera with another lens; and I could have used a flash light from the bathroom window so it would look like a wonderful sunbeam. Or, I would wait here ready with the right camera hiding behind a curtain between 10:30- 10:55 am (the time in which the sun reaches our lemon tree) for several days. Did you get the point?

So we went down to the lowest place in world, first just for an initial impression, together with cameras, Dave the copyrighter and Avigail Marsha from Studio Avigail, which is responsible for AHAVA’s new branding process. After the initial visit, Avigail tightened up her unique visual concept and got AHAVA’s O.K. That is where Guy Raz, a location producer (who happened to be born and grew up in Kibutz Ein-Gedi, just beside the Dead Sea) got into the picture. We sent him our brief and he went out for two days, scouting for appropriate views applicable to our brief. We joined his truck for the third day, planning the final details and determining the shooting spots for the two shooting days ahead with Eilam to guide us. The only unknown was the weather:  sunny, cloudy, hazy? Heaven knows.

It was hazy. In such cases you can’t just quit and come back at another time. It becomes just like writing a song. The camera turns to be an instrument that reflects your state of mind, rather then reality.

I must admit that the ‘AHAVA’ new-branding project was quite like a song regarding us. Starting from Avigail’s decision to have us participate in her visual concept brain storming; the trust and encouragement we got from the ‘AHAVA’ marketing team (Ohad Berger, Limor Ashkenzi, Elinor Attia,  Anat Spanier and Einat Brovin); the brain storming, research, the experiments we did, advancing step by step (and for a very long time under the leadership of the amazing Gerald Fitoussi, now the CEO of “ThinkThere”). For a long time we found ourselves dreaming “AHAVA” at night…

Indeed, it couldn’t happen without the vision and professionalism of those guys and we feel so lucky that we happened to work with them.

לפעמים זה קורה, יום צילום הופך להיות חגיגה. פתאום יש מסיבה. לאחת ה”מסיבות” האלה הגיע חבר של לקוחה וחברה טובה שלנו. ככה, בין לבין, הוא הראה לנו תמונות מסינגל פראי במערב קנדה, בו הוא השתתף. התמונות מהממות, האור אלוהי. איזה אור יום צפוני מהמם, אמרתי. “איזה אור? שאל החבר, היו שם מלא פלשים וגנרטור לחשמל”.

פעם מישהו אמר דבר דומה על הצילומים שלנו: “יסמין ואריה מצלמים מדהים באור קיים”. זה נכון ואנחנו לוקחים את המחמאה, אבל הוא אמר את זה על צלומי הפלשים שלנו. אנחנו עובדים קשה כדי שהם יראו כאילו צולמו באור יום צפוני “מדהים”.

יש קסם באור. אולי בגלל זה אנחנו צלמים. האור הוא חיים, פניו של משה קרנו ואת הקדושים הנוצרים ציירו עם הילה מעל הראש. אז צלמי טבע לוקחים איתם פלשים כדי לצלם את הטבע באור הטבעי, צלמי אופנה בונים סטים של צלומי חוץ עם פלשים ובלנדות וצלמי סטיל לייף מצלמים בעזרת תאורת קולנוע…

יש לנו זוג צופיות (יונקי דבש) בחצר, פשוש שבא לבקר ואדום חזה אחד. כל פעם שהם מרפרפים מול החלונות שלנו אני מפסיק הכל וצופה בהם מוקסם. כדי לצלם את אדום החזה כמו שצריך, צריך הייתי לתפוס אותו בדיוק בשעה שהשמש מאירה את החצר בחריץ שבין הבנינים והציפור נחה על הענף המואר. הייתי צריך מצלמה בפורמט של 35 ממ לפחות, עם עדשה ארוכה וצמצם פתוח כדי לטשטש את הרקע. או להכין לה מלכודת אור: פלשים וכל היתר. ככה זה לצלם “טבע”.

המיתוג החדש של “אהבה” מעבדות-ים-המלח כלל מבחינתנו, לצד צלומי סטודיו לאריזות וצלומים עבור הקטלוגים והמארזים, גם צלומי נוף בים-המלח. צלומי טבע  ב”אור קיים”. אביגיל מרשה (סטודיו אביגיל), שהובילה את תהליך המיתוג מחדש, זיכתה אותנו בפריביליגיה של שותפות בתיכנון התפיסה החזותית של השפה החדשה, ג’ראלד פיטוסי (היום: “thinkThere”), ליווה את התהליך בראשיתו. אחרי שצילמנו בסטודיו את הצילומים לאריזות החדשות, ניצבה בפנינו המשימה של צלומי נוף ים המלח. התחלנו בסיור קונספט, אביגיל, דייב הקופירייטר ואנחנו. ככה גיליתי שאורכו של ים המלח מצפון לדרום הוא קצת יותר מ100 ק”מ. פחות או יותר המרחק בין ת”א לחיפה. לא ידעתי, תמיד היה נדמה לי, משהו קטן… אה, גיליתי גם שאין כ”כ ים המלח. יש בריכות. ובולענים. אבל את הבולענים “חקרנו” בסיור אחד מאוחר יותר. ככה נוצר הבריף והקונספט הראשוני של  התפיסה החדשה. עם זה ועם הצלומים מסיור הקונספט התקדמה אביגיל הלאה מול השיווק של אהבה: אוהד ברגר , לימור אשכנזי, אלינור עטיה, ענת ספנייר,  ועינת ברובין. לכשניתן האור הירוק יצא גיא רז, סקאוטר (מפיק לוקיישנים בעיקר לקולנוע), מצויד בבריף שהכנו לו, לשני ימי חיפוש לוקיישנים לצילום. ביום השלישי הצטרפנו אליו לסיכום והכרות אישית עם בולעני ים המלח.

הכל היה מוכן והגענו לשני ימי צילום… במזג אויר אובכי. לא אור ולא גנרטור ולא פלשים. יחד עם עילם שהדריך אותנו במשעוליו של גיא, לקחנו את זה עד הסוף. התחברנו למצב רוחו של הים, חיברנו את האפוקליפסה אל המקום הכי נמוך בעולם ואל… עולם הערכים של “אהבה”: מיוחד (הכי מיוחד שיש), עמוק ושונה, פואטי, טבעי ולא מאולף, עוצמתי, בראשיתי, ראשוני ובתולי.

וזה לא יכול היה לקרות אלולא החזון של אנשי “אהבה” שסמכו על אביגיל ועלינו, נתנו לנו חופש פעולה לנסות, לבדוק, אוזן קשובה ופתיחות לשמוע את הרעיונות שלנו גם אם לפעמים לא היינו ממש ברורים. שהצליחו לשמוע את השיר שלנו בזמן שחיברנו אותו.

Adi came to work just after visiting her physician, the one who told her she is absolutely not in labor. She ended the day with an awesome baby girl named Tamar (which in Hebrew means “date palm tree”, or “date fruit”, depending your point of view…

היה רשום לנו ביומן שעדי תאחר ותגיע לסטודיו רק בצהריים. נשארו עוד שבועיים ללידה הצפויה, וזה היה הביקור הכמעט אחרון שלה אצל הרופא. היא הגיעה לסטודיו מחויכת משהו וכל 7 דקות נשענה על חצובה ונאנחה. אמרתי לה שפעם אחרונה שראיתי דבר כזה, זו היתה יסמין, בחדר לידה. עדי הבטיחה לי שזה לא זה והרופא אמר לה שיש לה לפחות עוד שבועיים. בערך ב- 20:00 נולדה תמר המדהימה לאמא הכי יפה וחכמה ומוכשרת… מזל טוב לכם, עדי ואבשה, אנחנו מתים עליכם!

ADI, we love you all so very much and are so happy for you and for Avsha!

And, last but not least, shooting soups (and liquids at all) is always a bit of a challenge; it has no shape and it reflects light just like a mirror. Still we do love a good and tasty soup bowl from time to time…

Recently, the Knorr’s Israeli Branch just launched 3 new soup flavors to the Israeli market. Working with their in-house design studio is always a plesure;  Vardit Dafni designed these beautiful, beautiful and appetizing packages, Nurit Kariv did the styling, Adi assisted us and made us a divine (home made) vegetable soup, and we had all the fun…

המרק של עדי

צילום קערת מרק הוא עסק מאתגר. מדובר בפלטה שטוחה ומבריקה של נוזל עם כל מיני דברים… מצד שני, מרק זה דבר טעים. לאחרונה, במסגרת המדיניות הגלובלית של קנור (יוניליוור), עוברת סדרת המרקים שלהם “מתיחת פנים”. התהליך התחיל בחו”ל וכמובן שמאוד שמחנו כשהחליטו להחזיר את צלומי הסידרה לארץ. ארט – ורדית דפני לסטודיו יוניליוור, סטיילינג- נורית קריב

1שורש פטרוזיליה/ 1 שורש סלרי/ 3 גבעולי סלרי/  2 גזר/ 2 בצל בינוני/ שיני שום  שלמות קלופות (לפי הטעם)/ 1 פלפל אדום/ 2 קולורבי/ 1 תפו”א גדול/ 250 גר’ דלעת/ 2 זוקיני/ רבע ראש כרובית/ 1 כף הריונית פפריקה מתוקה/ פפריקה חריפה (לפי הטעם, אופציונלי)/ 1 כפית פלפל אנגלי שלם/ מלח לפי הטעם/ 4 עלי דפנה / 3 כפות רסק עגבניות/ 1 כפית סוכר/ 2 ליטר ציר עוף (או אבקת מרק עוף)/ 2 כפות שמן קנולה. 

קוצצים את הירקות גס. מטגנים  בשמן את השורשים, בצל, סלרי והגזר משך 2 דק’. מוסיפים את שאר הירקות וממשיכים לטגן עוד 2 דק. מוסיפים את ציר העוף ומביאים לרתיחה. מוסיפים את התבלינים וממשיכים לבשל כשעה. מוסיפים את רסק העגבניות, וממשיכים לבשל עוד כחצי שעה. הולך מעולה עם לחם שחור של פעם, או סתם ערימה של שקדי מרק (של קנור כמובן|!)

Here is Adi’s divine vegetable soup recipe:

1 Parsley root/ 1 Celery root/ 3 Celery straw/ 2 Carrots/ 2 Onions/ Whole peeled garlic cloves   how many is up to your taste / 1 Red pepper/ 2 Kohlrabi/ 1 Big potato/ 250 Gram pumpkin/ 2 Zucchinis/ 1/4 Cauliflower/ 1 Spoonful with sweet paprica/ Hot paprica  up to your taste / 1 Teaspoon with whole allspice/ Salt according to taste / 4 Bay leaves/ 3 Spoon of tomato paste/ 1 Spoon of sugar/ 2 Liters poultry stock or 2 soonful of chicken-soup-powder boiled with 2 liter water/ 2 Spoon of canola oil

Chop the vegetables to big slices, fry the roots, onion, celery  with the oil in a pot for 2 minutes. Add the rest of the vegetables and continue to fry for 2 minutes more .Add the poultry stock antil boiling. Add spices and continue cooking for an hour. Add the tomato paste and keep cooking for half an hour. Superb whith black bread or even just croutons…

And talking about soups:

When our eldest was five, she asked us to buy her something she saw in a billboard ad. We convinced her that the desired object wasn’t really worth buying. We compared it to the work we are doing in the studio (by that time she was already very well acknowledged with), in which we are making our shooting objects more desirable then they really are. A day after, she brought home one of her friends. We where at the studio in a shooting session and her friend, whom never saw something like that, asked her what her parents do. “They are lying to other people”, said our cupcake, without any hesitation. Are we indeed?

Lately I received a link from a close and dear friend of ours. It was an article about “Generation N”-while ‘N’ stands for Narcissism: The 80’s generation and on. Together with the WWW, E-mail, ICQ and it’s successors, Facebook and it’s kind and smartphones, the 80’s generation stayed home with Mom and Dad until their 30’s and getting married (if at all) even later. It’s seems according to Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell the authors of – “The Narcissism Epidemic:
 Living in the Age of Entitlement” that they are too busy maintaining their Facebook identity, or should I say, their ‘branding’. Maybe no one told them that they were being lied to by illusive billboards when they were at the age of five.

There is no Angelina Jolie the way we grasp her. It is a Photoshop creation, what makes the attempt to coordinate somebody’s life with that creation, more miserable than rather pathetic. But “Entitlement” is not only the childish: “I want it! I want it!”. “Entitlement” is the inevitable frustration that comes with it, because no one can be Angelina Jolie, not even Angelina Jolie herself.

But what makes it all really sad, is that too much focusing on yourself in the mirror prevents you from seeing anybody else, including those who have got a true potential to love you.

Maybe I am onto something. Or maybe the best thing for me is to stop here and just clean this mess before Yasmin gets back home…

שקרים, תיק-אוכל וילדה בת 5

כשטליה היתה בת 5 היא בקשה לקנות תיק אוכל (סיני, זול, לא איכותי בעליל עם איור של וולט דיסני) שראתה על פוסטר מדיה. שכנענו אותה לוותר בעזרת מה שכבר הכירה היטב מהחיים בסטודיו: הצילום מרמה. למחרת בזמן שהיינו באמצע העבודה, היא הביאה איתה מהגן חברה חדשה. הילדה שאלה בסקרנות מה אנחנו עושים ובתנו האהובה השיבה מיד ובלי למצמץ: “הם משקרים לאנשים“.

איכשהו, כבר 15 שנה שאנחנו חיים בלי ערוצי טלוויזיה. מאוד נוח לנו עם זה והילדים נולדו לתוך המציאות הזו. לא שחסר להם משהו- הם מכירים את כל התוכניות החמות: בבית של סבתא, אצל החברים, וכמובן הכל נמצא באינטרנט. וכל פעם, אחרי 20 דקות של בהייה שלהם בתוכנית סינטטית זו או אחרת במסך המחשב, אני מרגיש איך הפתיל שלנו נגמר ואחד מאיתנו מתפוצץ ומעיף אותם לעשות משהו אחר.

אולי כי אנחנו חושבים שהילדה צדקה אז, כשהיתה בת חמש וזה לא רק אנחנו, זו תעשיה שלמה ש“משקרת לאנשים“?

לפני כמה ימים שלח לנו ג‘ראלד פיטוסי (“Think-There” עד לאחרונה “אהבה“) קישור לכתבה מסקרנת בכלכליסט אודות ענין חדש בארה“ב, הם קוראים לזה: הדור הנרקסיסטי- Generation N. זה בדיוק הדור של ילדי שנות השמונים – אינטרנט, אימייל, אי-סי-קיו, רשתות חברתיות, סמסים, סמארטפונים. מרוב שהם כל הזמן מחוברים לכולם הם מתעסקים בעיקר בעצמם. ג‘יין טוונג וקית‘ קמפבל טוענים בספרם “The Narcissism Epidemic:
 Living in the Age of Entitlement” שהעיסוק העיקרי ברשת הוא של מיתוג עצמי ולא חברתי במובן הקלאסי שלו. כולם רוצים להיות אנג‘לינה ג‘ולי ובראד פיט. או ממש, ממש, חושבים שמגיע להם להיות. אחת האנקדוטות שהם מעלים בספרם היא ההכפלה ב-500% של כמות הניתוחים הפלסטיים בארה“ב ב-עשרת השנים האחרונות. גם האנשים הופכים להיות סינטטיים יותר. משופצים. “משקרים לאנשים“.

הפתלוגיה של הנרקסיסטיות, כך הם כותבים, מסרסת את האמפתיה, התנאי הבסיסי לקשר אנושי חיובי ומפרה. כשטליה נכנסה אז לסטודיו עם שירז, ידיהן היו שלובות. הן נגעו זו בזו.

Then, with a dreamy look, she turns to our tiny garden, watering the flowers, watering the basil and mint, oregano and hyssop, sage and parsley.

Once upon a time, she did drive a huge combine trough vast tomatoes fields. She was born to farmers who cultivated a big farm in the biblical Jezre’el Valley, near Nazareth. So no wonder she has got that certain “look” when she is shooting plants of all kinds, something sort of: “get the hell out of here and don’t mess with me now!”

She knows almost every greenhouse in the country and they know her. So it is perfectly normal to get a hysterical phone-call at midnight: “Is Yasmin awake? Can you tell her that the VANILLA is in bloom?!!” Don’t you say?? “Yes, certainly I will”.

Tell me something, do you happen to know Lawsonia Inermis? Yasmin does. And she knows Sima Kagan M.Sc from the Volcani Research Institute, the only person in the country that grows it. I believe that Sima knows Yasmin as well… sometimes she is so worried about her precious flowers, that she X-rays them. Just incase.

Lately, TARGET, the 2nd largest discount retailer in the USA, started marketing a new private label, “Dead Sea Essentials by AHAVA”. Beautifully designed by Avigail Marsha, the pictures of the plants on the packaging have been taken, of-course, by Yasmin (which is, in a second thought, the name of a flower: Jasmine).

יסמין זה שם של פרח

ב- 1915,הלכו להם ההורים של סבתה של יסמין, מביתם מולדתם ל-TLV. אני חושב שאם הסבא רבה שלה (רב קהילה בלטוויה, שהעדיף בארץ הקודש את העבודה על פני הרבנות) היה יודע שיום אחד יקראו לתל-אביב TLV הוא היה מוותר והם היו נשארים בלטוויה. מצד שני, אח“כ היתה השואה, אז אולי מזל שהוא לא ידע.

שנים אח“כ, ברחה אהובה בתו וסבתה של יסמין, מחנות הספרים שלהם בתל אביב לבית הספר החקלאי לנערות בנהלל. היא היתה בת 15 ולמדה שם את אומנות הגינון והנוי. עוד לפני שהתחתנה והקימה משק ומשפחה בכפר יהושע, סבתא אהובה הספיקה לשתול את הנוי בבית חולים העמק. עד היום ניצבת לה שדרת הברושים של סבתא אהובה בקמפוס ביה“ח. בכפר יהושע הסיזיפית והספרטנית של אז, היא הקפידה לטפח את הגינה שלה ולמצוא זמן לאמנות. ציוריה המופלאים מקשטים את הקירות של רבים מבתי העמק. כך שכשיסמין תופרת את הארץ מקצה לקצה בחיפוש אחרי צמח החינה, או עץ התה (הממליס), יוצאת ובאה ממשתלה למכון הוולקני ומשם לחממה של איזה מטורף סחלבים, אני יוצא לגינה הזעירה שלנו, זו שיסמין מטפחת באדיקות של חלוץ מעמק יזרעאל ונושם עמוק. כשהיינו סטודנטים היא נהגה בקיץ קומביין ענק לקטיף עגבניות ודהרה איתו בכל הארץ. אז אני יודע שלא כדאי לנסות לעצור אותה ואם מודיעים לנו בהתרגשות שהווניל (שנף) בחממת הסחלבים פורח, כדאי לשתוק ולארוז את הציוד.

בסוף זה משתלם, גם אם לפעמים היא לוקחת את הפרחים שלה לצלומי רנטגן מרוב דאגה.

But we aren’t. In-fact, we are quite ignorant about most consumer cameras. Well, this is all about to change. We have a wonderful recommendation for you all: it is called Phase 1 p 65+ digital back with the Phase 1 DF645 (Mamia) camera body. Together with an 80 mm leaf -shutter Schneider Kreutzenach lens, it costs somewhere around the minor sum of 25,000 Euro. The only problem you might have is that it is somewhat “too big” for someone’s pocket.

The most important idea behind this toy is, shamelessly(?), the size. Yep, it is the size that matters after all…

Most common consumer cameras sensors are about 17X24 mm, and the hi- range SLRs sensors are 24X36 mm, while the medium format P 65+’s sensor is 40.4X53.9 mm. That means not only a superior resolution (a compressed 65 Mb raw equal to 175 Mb Tiff pic) but a fabulous dynamic range of 12.5 E.V. as well. Using it with its leaf shutter lenses or combined with a Hasselblad L.S. Lense, gives an outcome that leaves Photoshop handling to amateurs. It was back in 1995 that we first felt that medium format digital back had reached the point of being an appropriate alternative to film photography, when we bought the Leaf Valleo 22 D.B. It took us then less than a month to neglect film photography and to use it for all of our work- fitted to the Sinar technical camera as well.

But there is nothing ‘perfect’. We have had the new Phase 1 for over three months, and we are bearing the incomprehensible Capture 1 application that companions the Phase 1. It crashes, it falls down, it’s tools act like booby traps sometimes… When the program developers of the Leaf Capture (Leaf is now owned by Phase 1) didn’t succeed to properly create a feature, they just gave it up in the application. The result is a slim, but smart and functioning application. Meanwhile, it’s either we don’t understand what they wanted to give us, or that they don’t understand what we need… I will add more information and examples in the near future.

המעבר שלנו לצילום דיגיטלי, לפני קצת יותר מחמש שנים לווה בהרבה חששות. מצלמות ה DSLR (רפלקס דיגיטליות) לא היוו תחליף כל שהוא לשקופיות ה 4”X5”   או אפילו לשקופיות בפורמט בינוני (אגב, גם לא היום). לעומתם, הגבים הדיגיטליים החדשים לאותו זמן, בפורמט 6X4.5 ס”מ הגיעו כבר עם טווח דינמי דומה לצילום הכימי ו 22 מגה פיקסל מהפכניים. היה ברור שזה העתיד, אבל לא היה ברור אם העתיד כבר כאן. או בעברית, פחדנו להכנס להוצאה של מאות אלפי שקלים ולהמשיך לצלם שקופיות עד לדור הבא של הגבים הדיגיטליים.

חודש אחרי שקיבלנו את ה-  22 LEAF VALLEO  הפסקנו למעשה לצלם שקופיות. ה-VALLEO היה הגב הראשון שאיפשר צילום סטודיו איכותי – שווה ערך ועולה על צלומי סרט (שקופיות), בגודל שבאמת מתאים לשימוש מסחרי. התוצאות היו מרהיבות. זה היה באמת זה.

לאחרונה צרפנו גב חדש, “בגדנו” בכאב ב LEAF שמרכז הפיתוח שלהם נמצא בהרצליה וקנינו את  ה- PHASE 1 65+ המתחרה וזה לא מכבר, גם הבעלים של LEAF. בעולם שבו לעיתים הדבר היחיד שבאמת חשוב לקוח הוא המחיר, בעולם שבו צלמים יכולים לצלם במצלמות חובבים ופוטושופ הפכה מילה נרדפת לצילום (“לא נורא שהצילום לא משהו, אני תכף מעביר את הקובץ למשה והוא יתקן אותו בפוטושופ”) ההוצאה המטורפת הזו לא ברורה מאליה, אבל כשרואים מה היא עושה, נו, באמת, איך אפשר להתאפק… ההבדלים מתחילים בגודל החיישן- 6X4.5 ס”מ של דלסה, אותה פירמה של החיישן הישן והטוב של ה- LEAF. הטווח הדינמי זהה ואפילו טוב מהטווח של סרטי השקופיות הישנים- בערך 12.5 EV. בדקנו גם את הקנונים והניקונים החדשות. המחיר שלהן מפתה ויש להן תכונות מדהימות בצלומים בתנאי תאורה אפסיים או בצלומי וידאו (וואו, פשוט וואו!). עם כל הגיבויי שיש לחברות ענק כאלה מבחינה טכנולוגית, בסופו של דבר, הגודל כן קובע ואין מה לעשות נגד זה. כמו שאי אפשר היה להשוות את האיכות של שקופית 4X5 אינץ’ לסרט 35 מ”מ. הגודל משפיע לא רק על הגודל הסופי של הקובץ שרבים מתפתים לראות בו את חזות הכל, אלא בעיקר על הטווח הדינמי, עומק הצבע והחדות. כל אלה דברים שפוטושופ יכול לזייף, או למצער לשפר אבל לא לתת את הדבר האמיתי. עכשיו, לך תסביר את זה למשה.

רק שהתוכנה מבאסת. הרבה רעש, צלצולים ועיצוב אבל כל כפתור שם יכול לתקוע את התוכנה והגב. גם התוכנה של LEAF עברה דרך ארוכה, אבל לפחות לא היתה להם יומרה להראות לפוטושופ מאיפה משתין הדג ובסופו של דבר הם סיפקו תוכנת צילום יציבה, רזה, ויעילה מאוד. יש הרבה דמיון בין שתי החברות- האחת, LEAF, התחילה את דרכה כחלוצת דרך של הצילום הדיגיטאלי, במדינה קטנה- ישראל (SCITEX) ושם היא גם גוועת פחות או יותר בימים אלו. PHASE 1  היא חברה דנית,  שהצליחה קצת יותר מLEAF לממש את הנישה הזנוחה ע”י חברות הענק היפניות, הנישה של צילומי הסטודיו המקצועי בפורמט בינוני. מענין לראות את ההבדלים בגישות של שתי חברות כ”כ דומות וכ”כ שונות ולמרות הצער על חוסר ההצלחה של החברה הישראלית, בסופו של דבר, יש בזה משהו מעודד: הישראלים, כחברה קטנה, הבינו שהם לא יכולים לקפוץ מעל הראש ומיקסמו את היתרונות שלהם למוצר מעולה. למרות שזה נשמע פתטי, כשלא הצליחו להטמיע בתוכנה UNDO (כן מסתבר שזה לא פשוט) אז לא הפעילו את הפונקציה הזו. אבל מה שהיה עבד מצוין, בסופו של דבר. Pahse 1 מספקים סקיצה לתוכנה שגם פוטושופ יכולה ללמוד ממנה. בתאוריה. בינתיים זה לא ממש עובד. זה לא שאי אפשר להסתדר, בכל זאת הגב מדהים, אתם יכולים לראות, אבל הגאווה הלאומית שלנו… לפחות אפשר לרדת קצת על הדנים (שקנו את LEAF מקודאק, כנראה בשביל הפטנטים).

Yes, no doubt about it. It’s early in the morning and I stare a steady look straight to the brown eyes gazing at me from the mirror: eating is disgusting. Chewing is disgusting. Every thing that concerns eating is repulsing. It makes you fat, it makes you ill. Did you know, for example, that starved laboratory rats lived significantly longer than satisfied ones?

Me? I think to myself when I am entering the studio, I am a starving rat. I am strong and slim and healthy. I will live for ever. The studio smells like a three-star Michelin guide restaurant. Well, today we are shooting with a real supreme chef. I like him a lot. He really knows how to cook. I really like what he is doing, sort of, if I only were a guy who loved eating. But I am not. May be I will taste a little just not to hurt his feelings. He is a real emotional fellow. But think about it this way: this genius and brilliant chef takes a portion of a dead beautiful and innocent animal, let’s say, just for a slight demonstration, a real delicious Entrecôte (rib eye) steak that had been proper curing- rear to medium-rear with some butter on it and an appetizing umamic taste (our new discovered fifth taste in food similar to the flavor of glutamates) such as the one that leaves you incapable of wiping your chin while chewing till its over, and then, praising Lord whom you never believe in. HalleluYa (It’s a Hebrew word so don’t tell me how to spell it). As I all-ways say: meat is murder.

F__k. I messed it all up, again.

The thing is that I read somewhere that guilt is a bad consultant. So, very wisely I advised myself to drop upon me any self accusation. After all it’s not the outcome that matters, it’s the way that matters and deep inside, I truly believe that eating is disgusting. Tomorrow, tomorrow we are eating a new dish… So sorry, I meant shooting, shooting a new dish.

אוכל זאת בעיה קשה (סיפור למבוגרים בלבד)

אוכל זאת בעיה קשה, אני משנן לעצמי בבוקר עם ציחצוח השיניים. ברור לי, אני חושב בערגה כשאני נזכר בכל סיפורי האנורקסיה ששמעתי בחיי, שאפשר להשתכנע בזה. אם ילדה בת 15 מסוגלת, אז גם אני יכול, אני מבטיח לעצמי. רעב זה כיף, זו הנאה צרופה. בטן ריקה, מקרקרת, תחושה של קלילות מרחפת, של בריאות, חיות מתפרצת, אושר, אושר עילאי, אושר במשמעות הקתולית שלו, גן עדן עלי אדמות, שטר המחילה שלי לכל גרם מיותר שאני נושא. היום אני ארעב. ארעב בשקיקה, אביט בכל החיות הרעות בסטודיו שאוכלות כל הזמן, חסרות איפוק מול כל המטעמים שמתבשלים, מפעפעים ורוחשים בסירים. שנאפים בתנור, בריח כבד ומשכר שמצליח לחמוק מהמינדף, ממלא את הנחיריים ואת הגרון, ממלא את הלוע ברוק ואת ההכרה במיקסם השיקרי של “רק טעימה קטנה“.

נו טוב, לא הצלחתי הפעם. או בעצם, גם הפעם לא הצלחתי. אבל אסור להפסיק, צריך להמשיך בדבקות של חסיד סאטמר בן 15; אוכל זאת בעיה.

Yearning to be hospitalized

When GE studio asked us to shoot the RAMBAM hospital menu, my imagination went crazy. I saw in my mind a huge campaign, thousands of people straggling to enter the hospital under a brilliant copyrighter’s slogan (mine): “RAMBAM meals, nothing of a hospital!” .They missed the point. All they wanted was 12 shots for 12 recipes in their new year calendar. Art direction: Merav G. from GE studio, recipes and food preparations: Batya Berneman from RAMBAM Medical Center.

אוכל של בית חולים

כשמרב ושרון מסטודיו גבעת אלה ביקשו שנצלם את התפריט של חדר האוכל במרכז הרפואי רמב“ם, נשרפו לנו במוח כל הפיוזים. תודו שזה פסיכי לחלוטין. בראש רץ לי קמפיין היסטרי- הזקנה במסדרון (ברקע חלון לכרמל), שרה בקול צלול: “בכל שנה בדיוק בזמן, אני שוברת את האגן” ואז עולות כתוביות: “תפריט האביב בבי“ח רמב“ם, אסור להחמיץ!”.

לא הלכו על זה. אבל הכרנו אנשים מקסימים, בתיה ברנמן- מנהלת מערך המזון שהיתה אחראית למתכונים ולתבשילים (הטעימים! חייבים להודות), אייל שטרנבך משיווק וכלכלה, נורית מיחס“צ… וזהו, יצא בסוף לוח שנה/ מתכונים נהדר. ניהול ארט: מרב גרינצוויג- סטודיו גבעת אלה.

חדש. התחלה חדשה וכל ההתחלות קשות. להצחיק? להיות מקצועי? אישי? אינפורמטיבי? שיווקי?

זה הולך להיות הבלוג של יסמין ושלי.

כמו שאנחנו, כמו שאני כותב. הוא ידבר על התעשיה שלנו ועל הילדים שלנו. על הלקוחות ועל החברים, על הספקים. כי ככה, אצלנו הכל מעורבב ויש המון לספר. אתם מוזמנים להגיב (הלו, יש שם מישהו??) ואו, כן, אני כותב עם המון סוגריים (אולי בכל זאת גם לי יש ADD). כל הזמן דברים קורים, כל הזמן צילומים חדשים, טיולים ארועים.  אז הפוסט הראשון (איך אני בלאמץ טרימינולוגיה של “בלוגרים”?) יהיה ארכיונאי משהו, קטלוג קצר של כל מיני דברים בחצי שנה האחרונה שלא בא לי לוותר עליהם. ואם יצא לנו להרחיב עליהם בקרוב אז יופי ואם לא, אז גם.

מה היה לנו? ולא לפי הסדר:

Our 12 years old daughter’s birthday party was fabulous! (I warned you that I am going to mix everything together). It was a splendid combination of a delicious buffet, charming country location and wonderful, wonderful friends who made this party such an unforgettable event.  If there is one lesson we wanted to teach her, it was exactly that: no money could ever buy her the love and affection that she was granted from our friends, love and affection that made her party as fabulous as it was. This clip that was made for her by Tami Caspi Eshel to the words of Dagan Eshel, – and the music- by the Israeli band “DAG_NACHASH”, is only a glimpse of her party:

The new “MAADANOT” (a local Israeli brand) pizza series challenged  us to reflect upon a real appetizing, -home-made pizza from a (delicious) frozen industrial one, without loosing reliability. Together with Nurit Kariv- food styling, & Carmit Lasar- one of the most professional Marketing Directors we ever worked with,  -and Yamit from “Baruch Nae”  it turned out to be a pleasure:

Ernesto Bijovski & Assaf Cohen established their branding & design studio, “Blend-It”, only 2 years ago. Since then, they have become one of the most promising studios in the country. These three  examples, Photographed not so long ago, will demonstrate the reason:

צילמנו לארנסטו ואסף (Blend-it) את אל-גאוצ’ו  מבית נטו (סטיילינג נורית קריב) ואת  Maimon’s . על זה יש לנו רק להגיד- אלוהים (לא ארנסטו, אני לא מתכוון אליך), תודה!

Blend-it עצבו גם את “גם אבא יכול”, הספר-להיט של יובל קמפ ורומם סרנגה בהוצאת קרפד של גיל חובב. לא היה שום דבר בצילומים לספר הזה חוץ מהנאה צרופה, ואני חושב שרואים אותה בדפי הספר.

“NeoGroup”, Philip Bulakia’s design and branding group, is a leading Israeli studio which we are so proud to have-worked with along the years. Over the last months we have worked with them on several projects as you can see:

ושוב, כמובן, נאו-גרופ –שמן זית לפרג (דיקלה, סטיילינג נורית ק.), שטראוס דנונה וגבינות(כינרת ויפית סטיילינג נורית ק.), ועוד אריזות של שופרסל (יפית), טיפל’ה שונות, קצת מזכיר לי (נו טוב) איטליה, מיתוג מחדש לבאלדי (קארין) ודקדק של יחיעם (גדי):

Every once in awhile, we share the studio capabilities with parts of our society that need a little support: the “Shanti House” in TLV collects street kids all around the country, offers them hot meals, a bed to sleep in, social support, re-directs them to the educational system and most importantly, it offers them affection and love from the extraordinary professional staff. The kids are touching and beautiful, and their pain is heart breaking. Michal Moses recruited us for a noble project that she initiated and produced- to create and publish a cook book with 52 meal recipes (for 52 weeks of the year) composed by almost all of the leading Israeli chefs and photographed by 17 Israeli food & documentary photographers and studios. All was a donation for the Shanti House. It was called “Not by food alone”. We participated with some shooting sessions and we took upon ourselves the book photography editing. The book was beautifully designed by Ayelet Yehuda of– YayaStudio.

לא הכל שמח.  כל שנה אנחנו לוקחים  על עצמנו בהתנדבות פרויקט חברתי. השנה השתתפנו בצילומי “לא על האוכל לבדו” של בית השנטי וערכנו את כלל צלומי הספר שצילמו בהתנדבות שבעה עשר  צלמים וסטודיו  ישראלים. מיכל מוזס, שיזמה הפיקה וערכה את הפרויקט הזה פנתה אלינו (בהיסוס מה אני חייב להעיד) להשתתף בצילומי הספר. בלי שתשים לב לקחנו על עצמנו גם את עריכת הצילומים בספר שעוצב מקסים ומדויק כל-כך ע”י איילת יהודה- YayaStudio. הדיסוננס בין הילדים היפים השמחים למטען הכאב שכל אחד מהם נשא איתו קרע את הלב. המציאות של ילדה בת 14 שמחפשת מיטה בטוחה להניח ראש ללילה הופכת קרביים בשעה שאתה עסוק להקריא לילדה שלך סיפור לפני שינה.

בימים אלה ממש מתקיימת בביתן 24 בנמל ת”א – בהאנגר של קום-איל-פו תערוכת צילומים מתוך מאגר התמונות שצולמו לספר. אצרנו אותה יחד עם רזי לבנת הטוב. כל ההכנסות, כמו ממכירות הספר, קודש לילדי בית השנטי. הספר באמת מקסים, אחלה ספר בישול שנכתב ע”י טובי השפים הישראלים, אחלה Coffe table book לסלון ותרומה לילדי בית השנטי. אז קנו שני ספרים, אותו ואת “גם אבא יכול”, תרומה ראויה לגיל חובב…

The in-house Unilever-Israel graphic design studio is a very dear client of ours. Usually, one is exposed to our work with them at the supermarkets shelves, just like in the case of “Helmann’s mayonnaise” and chicken sauces projects. But a lot of their work concerns the professional market, and some of it, from our latest project with them, is shown here.

לא כל מה שיוצא לנו לצלם מגיע לחזית המדפים ברשתות. החטיבה המקצועית של יונילוור מבצעת המון פעילות שיווק והדרכה שלא נחשפת אלא לשוק המקצועי. אז לצד צילומים למותג קמעונאי כמו רטבי עוף הלמנס ומיונז  בטעמים (ורדית) ודגני הבוקר (ג’מה) שהגיעו למדפים, הסטודיו של יוניליוור (אייל, ג’מה, ורדית, מיכל) ופרילנסרים שלהם (שלומי אפרת), מצלמים פרויקטים מרהיבים, קטלוגים, חוברות וחוברות מתכונים. פרויקטים יפהפיים שלא כולם זוכים לראות. אחד מהיתרונות הכי גדולים של העבודה עם החטיבה המקצועית הוא גילי חיים (מי שעשה את ספגטים), השף של החברה בישראל. סתם, רק רצינו שתדע.
